Sean Ooi - Director

Founder & CEO of The Academy Music Centre and Buzztank, Sean is an accomplished leader with over 12 years of expertise in the music industry. He specializes in pedagogy, operations management, creative production, and business development. Known for his dynamic marketing strategies and innovative approach, Sean has successfully expanded into new markets, achieving significant revenue growth. Sean currently serves as the President of the Malaysian Music School & Teacher Association, where he advocates for the advancement of music education and the professional development of music educators across the nation. Additionally, he was the Music Director for Sri KDU National School, where he contributes to enhancing the school's music programs and fostering a love for music among students. Under his leadership, The Academy Music Centre has flourished as a premier music institution, earning the Best Music Academy 2023 award and Top 100 Shortlisted SMEs by Ambank. Sean’s retail brand, Buzztank, is a top seller on platforms like Shopee, Lazada & TikTok representing internationally renowned brands. A visionary educator, Sean has also contributed as a university lecturer and music psychology course developer. Momo Fariq - Principal

Affectionately known as Momo, Fariq is one of our rising stars in the Malaysian music scene, and it’s easy to see why. With a Diploma in Jazz Guitar Performance and a Degree in Music Composition from UiTM, he brings both technical mastery and creative depth to every lesson. Some might even say we’ve got the next Earl Klugh in our midst. Momo is a true all-rounder when it comes to guitars. Whether it’s electric, classical, or jazz guitar, he handles each style with confidence and finesse. He also teaches ukulele and is an accomplished composer, giving students a well-rounded musical experience that goes beyond just playing notes. Outside the studio, Momo has a love for travel and the outdoors, always seeking new experiences and perspectives. That same curiosity and openness carry into his teaching, making lessons feel fresh, engaging, and meaningful. Known for his hardworking and dedicated nature, Momo is a favourite among students. His knowledge of guitars, composition, and music runs deep, and as a bonus, he even has a knack for repairing musical instruments. Dr. Andre Ng - Head of piano

Dr. Ng Hong Liang, Andre, is a passionate collaborative pianist and graduate of the Doctor of Musical Arts in Collaborative Piano Performance from North Dakota State University's Challey School of Music. He thrives on working with musicians across all levels, from young amateurs to seasoned professionals, participating in diverse recitals and competitions. A devoted opera enthusiast, Dr. Ng has contributed to numerous opera productions, serving as répétiteur and rehearsal pianist. His repertoire includes productions with NDSU Opera and Fargo-Moorhead Opera, such as Bon Appétit! by Lee Hoiby, Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro and Die Zauberflöte, Handel’s Giulio Cesare, Heggie’s Three Decembers, and Humperdinck’s Hansel and Gretel. Recently, he was involved in Kuala Lumpur City Opera’s production of Puccini’s La Bohème and Opera Fiamma’s Amahl and the Night Visitors. Dr. Ng’s dedication to refining his craft has led him to participate in esteemed festivals, including the MN SourceSong Festival, where he collaborated with world-class musicians like violinist Grace Park, cellists Paul Wiancko and Collin Carr, and mezzo-soprano Clara Osowski. He was a piano fellow at the Bay View Music Festival, contributing to productions such as Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte and West Side Story.

Adrian Yap

Adrian may often be the subject of some good-natured teasing, but he is without a doubt one of the most dependable and hardworking teachers in The Academy family. Calm and composed on the outside, Adrian brings a steady and focused presence into every lesson. At the same time, his witty and sharp personality keeps students engaged, often delivering clever insights that turn into memorable learning moments. Having started drumming at 16 and completing his Grade 8 Rockschool certification, Adrian now brings over 13 years of teaching experience to the table. He works exceptionally well with children, creating a structured yet enjoyable environment that helps students stay motivated and progress confidently. Recognised as one of our top drum teachers, Adrian is a reliable, skilled, and highly sought-after educator who consistently brings out the best in his students.

Havilah

All the way from the interior division of the west coast of Sabah, Teacher Havilah used to travel 3 long hours to attend her weekly piano lesson in the city. To have teachers who have such passion for music is one of the many things we are proud of at The Academy. 2026 marks the 14th year of her music journey on this side of Malaysia. Havilah graduated from UiTM with a Bachelor’s Degree in Performance and holds a Master’s Degree in Performing Arts from Universiti Malaya. Self-driven and a perfectionist herself, Teacher Havilah educates her students with a unique and systematic approach. Wai Kent

Meet Tang Wai Kent, your soon-to-be favorite violin teacher with 12 years of experience turning screechy strings into symphonies. This maestro has performed with the RTM Orchestra and KLPAC Orchestra, leaving audiences in awe. When he’s not performing, Kent arranges concert music for the Malaysian Philharmonic Youth Orchestra and the prestigious Shanghai Symphony Orchestra. Armed with a Bachelor's in Music from ASWARA (with honors, naturally), Kent is also a certified sound engineer. He’s got the academic chops and technical skills to make your violin sound like a Stradivarius, even if it’s just a rental. As if that’s not enough, Kent has won countless film scoring awards. So, if you’re ready to learn the violin from a true virtuoso with a sense of humor, Tang Wai Kent is your guy. Join his class and prepare for a musical adventure filled with laughter, learning, and maybe a few accidental squeaks.

TUNKU SHAFIQ

Ready to find your rhythm and make some groovy beats? Meet Teacher Tunku Shafiq who's here to turn your wobbly limbs into solid rhythm machines! He holds a Bachelors in Music & Arts Management from Middlesex University and a Music Business Diploma from ICOM Music College. With over a decade of performing in the music industry and more than 5 years of teaching experience, his musical journey has taken him through various genres like Pop, R&B, Rock, and even Metal. He has graced stages across Malaysia and South East Asia, bringing his unique flair to the music scene. But that's not all - on some days, he dives into the world of orchestral music, crafting stunning compositions for films and video games. This has paved the way for him to become an experienced producer in the audio-visual industry!

Steward Chang

‘Anywhere the wind blows doesn’t really matter to me…’ He is the Malaysian reincarnation of Freddie Mercury. With an outgoing personality and top class showmanship, Steward stands out as a fine performer in the arts. Graduating from UCSI University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Contemporary Music, Steward has then gone forth and done exciting things. He was the judge of the Youth Music Competition, taught vocal lessons at Mega Music World and Mama Treble Clef Studio to name a few, and recently, he released his latest album on Spotify, titled “Jesselton Boy'“. A natural born performer, Steward also devotes his passion and energy into teaching vocal lessons to students of all ages. Not only will he bring out the singer in you, he’ll have you feel comfortable with singing your heart out, just like you do in the shower!

With a deep love for music and real stage experience, Chelsea brings heart and confidence into every guitar lesson. Classically trained with ABRSM Grade 8 Distinction, she believes learning music should feel expressive, enjoyable, and empowering. From performing at Good Vibes Festival to opening for Kodaline at Zepp KL, Chelsea shares her real-world journey to inspire her students in class. Known for her patient and encouraging approach, she creates a safe space where students can grow, explore, and find their own sound. Eugene

Eugene

Eugene can charm you with his guitar skills… don't be hypnotised! At first glance, he looks tall and cool as a cucumber, but there's much more to him. Beginning his guitar journey at just 13 years old, Eugene has taught at schools including Beaconhouse International School and Sri KDU. He holds a Bachelor's Degree in Contemporary Music from UCSI, majoring in Electric and Acoustic Guitar. Apart from performing at clubs, events, and weddings, he has also toured internationally as a guitarist aboard a Costa Cruise. You could say he has travelled the world and the seven seas. Beyond teaching, Eugene also manages the sales department at The Academy Music Centre and is always happy to lend a helping hand whenever students or parents need assistance.

Tan Jenna
Piano & Every Child Sings (ECS)

Tan Jenna

Meet Ms. Jenna, a fun, passionate, and perceptive teacher who knows how to bring out the best in every student. With a strong ability to identify each child's strengths and areas for growth, she creates lessons that are engaging, encouraging, and effective. She holds a Bachelor's Degree in Performance and Pedagogy together with a Master's in Performing Arts from Universiti Malaya. Her cheerful personality helps younger students feel comfortable and confident from the very first lesson. Ms. Jenna also leads our Every Child Sings (ECS) programme for children aged 4–6, helping them build strong foundations in rhythm, pitch, and listening before moving on to instruments. If you're looking for a teacher who combines musical excellence with warmth and enthusiasm, Ms. Jenna is a wonderful choice.

Carmen Tan
Contemporary Vocals

Carmen Tan

Carmen Tan is a passionate vocalist with a deep appreciation for R&B, Latin, Funk, and Afro-Cuban rhythms. Soon to graduate from UCSI University, Carmen has built an impressive performance portfolio while confidently embracing every opportunity to shine on stage. In 2024, she represented UCSI at the Malaysian Jazz Piano Festival, delivering a memorable performance of It Don't Mean a Thing. She has also performed at numerous productions and live events across Malaysia. Her credits include the Fat Boy Craft Beer Launch, A Christmas Playlist with the KL Strings Orchestra, the Aubrey Suwito Christmas Tribute, and her debut performance with her trio, Overnight Conversations. Carmen continues to inspire audiences through her unwavering passion for music and performance.

Azrul Shafiq
Drums

Azrul Shafiq

Mr. Azrul is probably the funniest drum teacher you'll ever meet. Holding a Bachelor's Degree in Audio Technology and Performance from UPM, he specializes in drums and percussion and brings more than 12 years of teaching experience in international schools. Beyond rock drumming, he teaches jazz, folk, pop, ska, reggae, and traditional music styles, making every lesson exciting and diverse. In 2015, he won 3rd Runner-Up in the Trinity Pop & Rock Battle of the Bands Festival at Brickfields College. Besides teaching, he performs with several major Malaysian bands locally and internationally. His favourite quote? "To be a good drummer, you'll need a lot of practice... unless you bring Mr. Azrul chicken nuggets!"

David Harding
Bass

David Harding

Ever found yourself nodding along to an irresistible bass groove and wished you could play it? David Harding is the teacher for you. With more than a decade in the music scene, David has performed with bands including Kaya and Billie Blue & The Nowhere Men, as well as at international shows in Singapore, Thailand, and India. Often described as the "Flea of Malaysia," David combines extensive performing experience with a genuine passion for teaching. His friendly personality and playful sense of humour make every lesson enjoyable while inspiring students to become confident bass players.

Pin Wei
Keyboard, Jazz & Classical Piano

Pin Wei

Meet Mr. Pin Wei, a talented and versatile musician who brings both technical excellence and real-world performing experience into every lesson. A graduate of UCSI University with a Bachelor's Degree in Contemporary Music, he began his musical journey at the age of eight with classical piano before discovering his passion for jazz and expanding into a wide range of musical styles. In 2022, Pin Wei was awarded 2nd Runner-Up at the Malaysian Jazz Talent Competition during the 9th Malaysian Jazz Piano Festival at KLPAC, reflecting his dedication and artistry as a pianist. At The Academy, Pin Wei leads our keyboard and workstation programme, helping students understand both performance and modern music production. Outside the classroom, he performs professionally across Kuala Lumpur in jazz, R&B, and pop settings while producing music for various projects. Fun fact: the piano background music you hear at Tropicana Gardens Mall was composed and produced by Mr. Pin Wei.

Voon Foong
Clarinet, Saxophone & Flute

Voon Foong

Mr. Voon Foong may be one of the coolest teachers you'll ever meet — all that's missing are his sunglasses. Specialising in clarinet and saxophone, he brings more than 10 years of teaching experience in international schools and teaches classical, jazz, pop, folk, and many other musical styles. Passionate about developing complete musicians, he goes beyond teaching notes by helping interested students learn transcription, playing by ear, and improvisation. Hand Voon Foong any woodwind instrument and he'll captivate you with his expressive playing. Outside the music room, he also teaches high-energy LesMills RPM fitness classes, proving he can switch effortlessly from calming melodies to heart-pumping workouts.

Meet Teacher Silver, where confidence meets creativity. A singer-songwriter and dedicated music educator, Silver combines real performance experience with thoughtful teaching to create lessons that are expressive, engaging, and inspiring. Holding a Master's Degree in Music Business from Berklee College of Music and having lectured Music Marketing at university level, Silver understands not only how music is created but also how artists develop throughout their careers. Specialising in contemporary vocals, piano, and songwriting, Silver focuses on helping students build confidence, unlock creativity, and discover their own artistic voice. She believes music should be empowering, expressive, and personal, giving every student a safe space to explore and grow.

Wei Hern

Wei Hern

With a passion for music that spans multiple genres, Teacher Wei Hern brings enthusiasm, versatility, and modern performance experience into every lesson. Currently pursuing his studies at the Institute of Music, UCSI University, he continues to refine his craft under renowned bassist Ken Chung. Before university, Wei Hern developed his musicianship as a self-taught bassist and guitarist while performing with his secondary school band, laying the foundation for his unique musical journey. Beyond teaching, Wei Hern performs with local indie artists including Adriel and Unlimited Abyss while exploring genres such as jazz, funk, fusion, and contemporary music. His lessons inspire students to become confident, creative, and well-rounded musicians.

Matthew
Piano & Violin

Matthew

Matthew's passion for music began at an early age and has led to numerous achievements, including Third Prize at the Taiwan International Piano Competition and Second Prize at the Euro Asia String Competition. He further developed his expertise at UCSI University, specialising in both piano and violin. With extensive experience teaching children aged 4 to 13, Matthew combines strong technical knowledge with a humorous and engaging teaching style that makes learning enjoyable and rewarding. His guidance has helped many students achieve success in prestigious competitions, including the Euro Asia Competition and the Hong Kong International Competition. Through dedication, encouragement, and expertise, Matthew inspires every student to pursue musical excellence while developing a lifelong love for music.

Esther Leong

Esther Leong

Meet Ms. Esther, one of the youngest teachers in The Academy family and a passionate music educator. She began learning piano at the age of six and completed her ABRSM Grade 8 Piano examination by the age of fifteen. An active musician in her youth church, Esther regularly performs alongside the choir. Her kind, gentle, and approachable personality creates a welcoming learning environment where students feel encouraged to grow in confidence and creativity. Ms. Esther's youthful energy and genuine care leave a lasting impact on her students' musical journeys. Outside the studio, she's also a fitness enthusiast who loves turning gym sessions into opportunities to enjoy great food — a true foodie at heart!

Guided by his belief that "Every piece is difficult until you practice your way through it," Teacher Jerrick encourages students to embrace challenges with patience, perseverance, and confidence. He believes that consistent practice, paired with the right guidance, allows every student to unlock their full musical potential. Holding ABRSM Grade 8 qualifications in both Piano and Violin, together with a Diploma in Music Performance from UCSI University, Jerrick combines strong technical expertise with a genuine passion for teaching. Beyond the classroom, Teacher Jerrick actively performs with a community orchestra, continually refining his musicianship and expanding his performance experience. His lessons focus on building strong musical foundations while inspiring confidence, discipline, and a lifelong appreciation for music in every student.

Mr. Ainul is a multi-instrumentalist with expertise in bass, drums, guitar, and sound engineering. Throughout his career, Ainul has collaborated with renowned Malaysian artists including Megat Fadzly, Hael Husaini, and Najmi Niery, bringing valuable industry experience into every lesson. Meet Teacher Jia Xuan, our dedicated Violin teacher. She began her musical journey at the age of nine and has actively participated in music festivals, masterclasses, and orchestral performances, continually developing her artistry and performance experience. Jia Xuan is currently pursuing a Bachelor's Degree in Classical Music at UCSI University, majoring in Violin under the guidance of Jacqueline Tan Poh Yin. Alongside her studies, she also works as a luthier assistant, gaining valuable experience in violin maintenance, setup, and repair. Her unique understanding of the instrument allows her to teach students not only how to play beautifully but also how to properly care for their violins. Teacher Jia Xuan creates a supportive and encouraging learning environment where students build strong technical foundations while developing confidence and a genuine love for music.

Wei Chen

Wei Chen

Teacher Wei Chen is a passionate musician, educator, and active performer dedicated to inspiring students through the joy of music. Alongside teaching, he regularly performs at concerts, music festivals, and international events, bringing valuable real-world performance experience into every lesson. His performance highlights include appearances at the Brunei Sultan's Birthday Celebration, Rondo Fest, the Super GT Racing Event, and performances with the Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra. Teacher Wei Chen believes every student learns differently, so his lessons are tailored to each individual's goals and pace. Focusing on strong technical foundations, musical expression, creativity, and confidence, he creates a positive learning environment where students can thrive—whether preparing for examinations, performances, or simply enjoying the lifelong journey of making music.
